DIAGNOSIS: Live left adnexal ectopic pregnancy
ANSWER: Ectopic pregnancy
This is an example of a live left adnexal ectopic pregnancy. Note on the provided ultrasound that no intrauterine pregnancy is identified. In the left adnexa, a fetal pole is identified which demonstrates a heart beat consistent with a live ectopic pregnancy. A yolk sac is also identified.
In cases of a ruptured adnexal ectopic pregnancy, a tubo-ovarian abscess, ovarian neoplasm and necrotic pelvic lymph node could all have similar appearances. Due to the fact that a clear fetal pole and yolk sac are identified, live left adnexal ectopic pregnancy is the diagnosis. It is also important to note that the patient has a positive urine pregnancy test which should clue you in to the correct diagnosis!
